about

Brightside is a ranty piano ballad reflecting on toxic positivity and distortions of the Law of Attraction.

I cover a lot of this in the song but my stance is that I see some merit to the law of attraction in the sense that focusing on your goals and dreams helps you take the actions that you need to take and make decisions that light you up. I do enjoy and revere those moments where things just click (and I write songs about those moments too, for example my song "2:22").

I draw the line when positive thinking is used to police peoples feelings or blame them for their situation. If things aren't working out the way you expected there are more factors than "not putting out the right vibes."

If you want to dive deeper on how toxic positivity effects our culture at large, I highly recommend the book Brightsided by Barbara Ehrenreich.

lyrics

I’m generally a joyful person
Even when things suck
I like to find the light bad situations

And I notice the things that are privilege and luck
And I casually acknowledge astrology
Look up every angel number I see
Cuz I like the stories you can make with little signs
But I find myself overwhelmed by the culture of "good vibes"

And folks who say they can manifest things with their mind

It’s ok to look on the brightside
It’s also ok to be sad
And it’s ok to feel all your feelings
And it’s ok to be mad

And yes things can just workout sometimes
but you can’t literally control the world with your mind
But it’s fine to look on the brightside

And i think we’re all connected in somehow
How that works is hard to say
Humans like to make connections
And tell stories
Making meaning in different ways
And we love finding ways to be creative
And sometimes we create conspiracies
Making connections to the things we can’t see

We like to be in control

So we think we can control the universe
But that’s not how it works
And it’s ok to look on the brightside
It’s also ok to be sad
And it’s ok to acknowledge your feelings
And it’s ok to mad

But it’s not’s ok to say things like

“you’re poor because you aren't putting out positive vibes. You can literally attract money with your mind This one time I wished really hard for $200 and then I found $200 on the sidewalk. So you just need to keep vibing high hon and it’ll work oooooooooout.

But it’s ok to look on the brightside

And listen I love a good fairy tale
I was raised on Disney movies too
And I think that life has a funny way
Of telling you what is true
And absolutely follow your dreams
But it’s all about the actions you takes
Have grand visions but look at the data
Ground yourself in the science and what’s real and what’s fake

And it’s ok to look on the brightside
And it’s ok to be sad
And it’s ok to acknowledge your feelings
And it’s ok to be mad
But it’s not’s ok
to tell people their cancer is the result of negative thoughts and if they just think positively they’ll be cured. People with cancer can feel whatever feelings they need to feel in order to process that they have cancer and feeling crappy about it is a valid emotion and will not negatively effect their treatment. In fact letting yourself feel all your feelings and acknowledging those feelings as valid can help you reach a grounded authentic place…

Which makes it easier to look on the brightside.

It’s ok to look on the brightside
It’s ok to be sad
It’s ok to acknowledge your feelings
It’s ok to be mad
It’s not ok to say a bunch of problematic pysedoscientific prosperity gospel victimblamy that doesn’t actually acknowledge white privilege and other situational factors or really any data at all

But it’s ok to look on the brightside

Do what you gotta do
(Look on the bright side)
But you don’t have super powers
(Look on the bright side)
Unless you can prove it to me with scientific data
(look on the brightside)
Then yay you have super powers that’s really cool
(look on the brightside)
And if you show me the science I will believe you
But otherwise I think it’s all confirmation bias
(confirmation bias)
